Language Acrobat
Hi! I’m Gennike Mayers, CEO of IYN. I’m a Language Acrobat with a passion for building bridges across language barriers.
As a teenager learning French and Spanish in high school I was fascinated by the strong connections built with complete strangers because I had a key to open their heart: speaking their language!
Since then foreign languages have opened many doors to lifelong friendships and rewarding career opportunities. I breathe, eat, sleep and dream in foreign languages. Actually it’s a misnomer to call them foreign! Let’s call them superpowers instead!
I discovered my superpowers in the midst of disaster, death and grief. This life-changing experience was my deployment to Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake. I worked with the world’s largest humanitarian network at that time. I had never done a First Aid course in my life, but I volunteered to go to Haiti as part of the Emergency Response Team. Alongside the doctors, nurses, search and rescue personnel, military, logisticians and all the experts of every imaginable field, my superpower was being able to speak French and Haitian Kreyol. This allowed me to connect with and be of service to people in their moment of need.
Language is my life’s passion! Being of service to others by facilitating communication is my source of joy! It’s all about service! After 20 years of honing my multilingual communication skills, I’m excited to help you overcome language barriers and discover your superpowers!
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” Nelson Mandela
Key areas of expertise
Interpreting
Interpreting involves the spoken word. Interpreters convey ideas expressed verbally from one language to another. There are various techniques & equipment used by Interpreters but none as impressive as the human brain!
Translation
Translation involves the written word. Languages have nuances so translators must go beyond words to grasp and accurately convey the intended meaning without getting lost in translation!
Multilingual Communications
Communication goes beyond sharing information. It takes account of feedback. IYN supports your multilingual projects with communications strategies and tactics that boost your organisation’s engagement and impact.
